so these silly chickens have added so much joy to my life not to mention some delicious eggs! i have found that they are very very affectionate and loyal to one another and extremely protective. they just love to hang and take their lil dirt baths and scratch and roost and it makes me so happy to watch....

free range means just that

well my girls have taken over the yard and then some. not at all skiddish or nervous about where they are headed or what is around the corner. today, they almost made it into the house. i find that i like to just leave them out of their coop as much as possible so that they can roam and forage at their leisure. i am saving alot on feed (not that it is expensive anyways). one thing i am having to contend with is the chicken shit. EVERYWHERE! they are not modest, they are not shy. i have never seen a chicken pee before i owned them and let me tell you, they squat almost just like we do.

fact

i always knew two things, without a doubt, that were going to be a part of my life from an early age. one, children. i knew, somehow, there would be an abundance of kids in my life. i didn't know in what form or capacity but i knew that there would be children present in my life. two, i knew that some sort of "farm" would be in my life as well.. now, my ideal farm was one that consisted of a bunch of "thrown away" kids and "thrown away" animals all together on one big ole patch of land with a HUGE farmhouse and a garden and chickens and the like. there, these lost kids and animals would find each other and form a bond of empaty and love and go on and lead happy lives. well, that did not exactly happen, however, i still think that i have a little slice of that dream. i have these sweet old dogs (3) and these funny, spastic chickens and the wee babe and her brothers and my art camp kids so the dream is not too far off. i have so enjoyed watching these crazy birds run around the yard searching and scratching for whatever they can gulp down. the concentration that these birds evoke is so fascinating. when they hone in on something you just better get out of the way. i swear, they are faster than the speed of light when there is a mosquito or moth around. i am enjoying all of my girls and look forward to many more adventures.

growing up!

this is how little the girls were when i got them. they all spent time in an old drawer from a dresser i had. i cannot believe how big they already are! some may say that i am going a bit nuts over these 4 chickens but i don't care because i love them soooo much! more fun to follow.

Love

so, about 7 weeks ago i drove the back roads to wilsonville to the coosa valley mill and feed store and picked up 6 lil chickens. i drove back home nervous and excited about the adventure that i was beginning to embark on. so, i decided to blog about me and my girls. hope you enjoy!
